How to Change Battery in Subaru Key Fob

How to Replace a Subaru Key Fob Battery
Some models of the Subaru may have a different style than others, so replacing the battery for Subaru key fob may vary. Follow the steps below to for how to open a Subaru key fob and replacing the Subaru key fob battery for your vehicle:
Newer Subaru Key Fob (Bulging Rectangle Shape) – Requires a 2032 Battery
- On the back of the key fob, push the small silver tab to release and pull out a metal key.
- Right next to where the key was pulled from, insert the tip of the key or a flathead screwdriver into the gap between the front and back of the key fob.
- Twist gently to pop open the key fob cover.
- Locate the flat round battery inside the fob–it may be on the flip side of the transmitter circuit board.
- Release the battery from the tiny tabs securing in place, and pop your new 2032 battery in, ensuring the correct side is facing up.
- Put the battery back together and put the metal key back in, making sure everything snaps into place.
Older Subaru Key Fob (Teardrop Shape) – Requires a 2025 Battery
- Locate the small niche in the seam between the front and back of the key fob.
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver into the niche and twist to pop open the key fob.
- Use the screwdriver to pop the old battery out, and place the new 2025 battery in, ensuring it has the correct side facing up.
- Snap the two sides of the key fob back together, and you’re all set!
Actual Subaru Key (Exposed Metal Key With Buttons) – Requires a CR 1620 Battery
- Locate the small niche in the seam between the front and back of the key encasement.
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver into the niche and twist to pop open and remove the encasement.
- Remove the smaller unit inside, and locate small tabs around the seams of this smaller unit.
- Press the tabs to open this encasement and reveal the battery inside.
- Remove the battery and replace it with a new CR 1620 battery, ensuring that the correct side is facing up.
- Snap the battery cover back together, making sure everything is properly aligned.
- Place the smaller unit back inside the key encasement, and snap everything closed.
